Formerly included in siligorensis as a valid subspecies, but distinct; see Ruedi et al. (2021). Includes thaianus; see Ruedi et al. (2021). Although Ruedi et al. (2021) also included badius in this species, we follow Tiunov et al. (2025) and consider badius as distinct. Specimens of siligorensis from the Malay peninsula and N Borneo that were not allocated to subspecies prior to the division of siligorensis, we regard as provisionally belonging to alticraniatus, pending further review.
