Vespertilio timoriensis

Timor [Indonesia]

Timor [Indonesia and Timor Leste]

CITES - Not listed (under Nyctophilus major) (2023). IUCN - Not Evaluated (raised from synonymy).

Most recently considered a nomen dubium. Likely conspecific with heran to which it appears similar morphologically and molecularly; see Parnaby and Helgen (2023). Does not include major, corbeni, sherrini, and shirleyae; see Parnaby (2009). The continuing presence of this species on Timor was in doubt until the recent capture of three sub-adult specimens in Timor Leste, but molecular testing is still need to confidently assign these specimens to a particular species. Although Parnaby and Helgen (2023) have tentatively identified what may be the holotype of this species, further molecular tests are needed to support this contention. For a detailed discussion of the complex taxonomic history of timoriensis see Parnaby (2009) and Parnaby and Helgen (2023).
